These
costs quickly add up for families earning $150 per month with three or four children in school.
Because of these costs, many families end up sending their children back to live and work with
family members in their villages. And still others keep their
children in the city but have them work in or outside the home instead of continuing with their
studies. Most of the families in
Ciudad Nueva are immigrants to the town from the nearby Andean highlands of Peru.
Tacna is the southernmost city in the country, bordering on Chile. It offers
employment opportunities for many families arriving from
remote rural villages.
The list of supplies AlliancExchange will be
funding includes:a backpack and an individual storage
container; used books, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, various kinds of paper, crayons,
markers, and tape. At the same time personal hygiene items such as a toothbrush and
toothpaste, hand soap, paper towels, facial tissues, napkins and a plastic plate and cup are
included. For recreation a set of gym clothes, a
rubber ball, and a jump rope are part of the package. Unlike U.S. schools where much is still supplied, schools in other parts of
the world are frequently without the resources to provide many items. Such is the case in this neighborhood school in Tacna.
If you would like to
help a child from Peru, go to our Donate page for information on sending a check or online
payment. Each supplies package costs
