2012 Update

We have begun our second year working with the program Our Seeds in Tacna, Peru.In 2011, we funded school supplies for 10 children; in 2012, we funded 20 children. In 2013, our goal is to support 30 children. This fall we will host a fundraiser for Our Seeds at the Machu Picchu Restaurant in Union Square, Somerville.Rosie Cerna, the restaurant owner, is Peruvian and is very supportive of this program. We hope to have live Andean Music at this event.Additionally, we will again host the Backpack Program to allow those who would like to support a child with a backpack and school supplies for $25.00.For more information about the Backpack Program, click here.

Some of the children supported include:

Alex is the oldest son of a single mother living two blocks from the church and school. He is eight years old and his little brother is two. After his mother was abandoned pregnant with Alex's little brother, Alex began to struggle with school. It doesn't help that his mother is illiterate, a single mother, and unable to find a steady job. Now the “man” in his family, Alex had to repeat this year in school.

Ruben is 8 years old and lives with his sister and his mom who is recently single. He is very loving and has grown in the hearts of many of the “tios” (uncles and/or aunties) here. His mom asked about the possibility of lowering the costs of Nuestras Semillas to make it possible for both her children to attend the school and participate in the program. She loves the idea of the program helping her and her children out, but now she is alone and even though the cost is very cheap, it is also very difficult without a regular income.
