to the Rainforests and Highlands of Ecuador

The production from bean to bar of the world class Kallari’s RainFamily dark chocolate was the inspiration for this Journey. 
During the journey you will follow the chocolate trail from the farmers in the rainforest to the chocolate factory in the
mountains.  You will learn about the process these inspirational people have been through to consistently produce this wonderful product.  You will have a chance to get to know the people and experience the cultures and history of this beautiful country. 
We are so excited to be able to share this journey with you:

 

 Itinerary at a Glance  -   June 5 to 17, 2008
 Cost: $2200.
Price Includes: land transportation in Ecuador (bus & boat), all meals and snacks, shared rooms,
Ecuadorian-end facilitators, translator, guides. Ecuadorian tax 12%. 
Price does not Include: Round-trip airfare USA-Ecuador, airport tax in Quito $38, alcoholic
drinks, tips, Shamanic ceremonies and healings in the Rainforest and Andes-Otavalo area.

Day 1

Arrive Quito in the evening from USA or from Galapagos

Day 2

Explore Quito & Ecuador's history and culture. Visit Kallari Cafe for an Introduction to the Chocolate Journey. Meet the Kallari Cooperative members who manage and run the Kallar cafe and chocolate operations.

Days 3-7

Travel to the Rainforest. During trip, background and orientation for chocolate tour. Over-night in Runa  Wasi. Stay in Cabins or growers’ homes. Meet the farmers, harvest cacao. Cultural exchange opportunities. 

Optional: Trek to Rio Blanco (3-4 hour rigorous hike into rainforest) for a 3-day visit. Meet and work with growers of cacao and community leaders. Projects with school children, shamanic healing ceremonies and cultural exchange in evenings. Ecotourism cabanas. Home stays optional. Opportunity to buy artisan products and healing rainforest medicines.  Trek out of community.

Visit Amazoonica, an open-air environment for injured and abandoned regional animals. Stop in other rainforest communities for drying and fermenting of cacao. Meet with community leaders, learn about other community economic sustainability projects.

Day 8

Travel from rainforest to Papallacta's hot springs for relaxation - recreation - exploration.

Travel to the Chocolate Factory in Quito. Work side by side with indigenous members of Kallari as they prepare world class  chocolate.

Days 10-11

Travel to Otavalo. Visit a women's crafts cooperative for feasting, music, dancing, and healing ceremonies.  Opportunity to purchase fine woven products. Visit the largest indigenous marketplace in Latin America.  Shop!

Optional: Participate in Andean Shamanic Healing ceremonies.

Day 12 Return to Quito.
Optional: Visit Women Entrepreneurs of Cutuglagua.
